Day 7: Campari Tomatoes

This is the painting for Day 7 #stradaeasel

Another windy day but this time with snow blowing sideways. Indoors with a still life seemed definitely preferable!

I went hunting in the kitchen and settled on tomatoes in a bowl. I took the set up a step further this time and put the still life into a bankers box set on its side so the opening was toward me. Then I directed the lamp to it from the right. That blocked most of the overhead lights and gave me more distinct shadows.

I feel that I am getting a better handle with oils but I know that I have a long way to go. While I was painting the tomatoes, I was trying to decide what to do with the background. It finally made sense to paint the inside of the cardboard box but leave it somewhat ambiguous. I like how it created an overall warm tone to the painting. I included a shot of the painting on my easel with the still life in the background.
