Day 21 #stradaeasel

Today was a fun day painting with friends. Some of my fellow artists and I were invited over to one of the ladies’ studios.

I brought the tulips with me for a still life although we did not all choose to paint them. I did, however, since I’m doing this challenge and one must paint from life to fulfill the requirements. Since three of us were gathered around the still life, it had to work for all three views. Doing the whole bouquet was a complex set up to paint, especially when there was less than three hours to devote to it.

I did my best to finish the painting with the time available. I essentially just attempted to capture the complete scene without spending much time on detail.

I painted on an 8″ x 10″ canvas instead of my usual 6″ x 8″ boards. Another new experience for me in surface texture. The canvas which is like a linen weave takes more paint to cover and fill in the texture. I like the smooth boards I paint on better than the canvas but maybe that’s just because I’m used to them. Also, I believe the quality in canvases, as in everything else, makes a big difference.

I could have used more time—the painting isn’t finished and looks a little soft overall. I may go back to it and try to finish it on another day.
