"Summer's Warmth”, 6” x 8”, pastel

The Flathead Lake Biological Station in Yellow Bay has been hosting artists this summer and last for plein air days. There are so many landscapes within the landscape at this location, if you know what I mean. I picked this spot when the warm light filtering through the trees sparked my inspiration. Innumerable greens are part of the summer foliage and I used at least a dozen greens out of my box to capture the warm and cool shadow light.

Several years ago, my husband and I stayed in this very cute room in Somers on the west shore of Flathead Lake. This was before the era of Air BnB’s. It belongs to a good friend of ours and she named it “The DeVine Room”. We had a good laugh over that. I’ve always wanted to paint it from the photo I took but wasn’t sure I could do it justice. I finally got up the courage to give it a try.

It was a fun day of day of painting at the Flathead Lake Biological Station earlier this week. Thanks to Sandra Marker for organizing the artists to come and paint at this beautiful lake side setting. And thank you to the wonderful folks at Yellow Bay for allowing artists to experience the landscape in addition to the important work they are doing for the health and quality of the lake. Both of these studies are 6” x 8”, pastel
