Day 18 #stradaeasel

With all the fresh snow, I was inspired to go outdoors to paint today. I only had so much time after working & meetings so I picked a very simple scene that I could complete before it got too dark to paint.

I was happy to work with my pastels again after week of only painting in oil.

I haven’t had a lot of experience painting snow. Last winter I was painting for my summer exhibit and stayed in the studio. I remember thinking at the time, that I was definitely going to get out and paint snow this winter.

My challenge was getting the boughs of the tree to look heavy with snow. It was overcast so I exaggerated the color of the snow a bit to get the distinction between warm and cool light.

As I painted, the snow was melting and dropping off the boughs. I was getting drips from the trees falling on my painting. Normally I would pack it up and call it quits but not today. I needed to complete this one. I fixed the wet drops by drying them with a hair dryer and then blending over the water spots.
